Educate a Child
Researches conducted by various NGO communities in the country have concluded that, back-to-school formula for their children would be one of the most significant ways to rehabilitate the displaced families.
Again, lack of food, bereavement and sickness can make life difficult for these children, thus for many children, school would be their only respite from such difficult conditions.
As part of this comprehensive program, we are challenged to raise funds in sponsorship to continuously meet costs of providing the most basic necessities: books, uniforms, educational materials and boarding costs for these children. Thus all the money collected will be solely used to meet the costs for educating and up-keeping the children in various schools nearer to their homesteads.
Amrita Centre Kenya is determined to educate under-privileged children, with an emphasis on value-based education. Self confidence, courage, integrity, politeness, truthfulness are all noble virtues which can be assimilated only through education based on values. The more one comes to know oneself, the more one will be prepared to face life.
While Amrita Children's Home continues to develop, Amrita Centre Kenya awarded scholarships to an additional 54 needy children in secondary schools throughout Kenya. The funds for these scholarships shall be raised through the generous contributions of well-wishers. It is estimated that annual scholarship for a pupil will cost KSH 40,000 (equivalent to US$500), which includes accommodation, food, clothing, health, uniforms, and schooling.
Children belonging to the following categories will be eligible to apply for the scholarship scheme:
1. Children from very poor families (earning less than US$ one per day) that have been unable to access education.
2. Children who have lost their parents.
3. Children who have dropped out of schools due to financial difficulties.
4. Children that have been affected by HIV-AIDS, preventing them from attending school.
5. Girls who have been deprived of schooling.
6. Children of single-mothers.
Amrita Centre Kenya appreciates the compassionate donations of well-wishers, in all forms. We humbly appeal for your participation to ensure the speedy realization of this project. Your contribution can be in various forms:
1. Funds for development of the home.
2. Sponsoring a child for one year's scholarship.
3. Material donations - e.g. bricks, cement, roofing panels, furniture and fixtures, and consumables.
4. Donations of food
5. Your precious time as volunteers
"There are two types of education: education for livelihood and education for life.... The main purpose of education should be to impart a culture of the heart-a culture based on moral and spiritual values." - Amma
It is our pleasure to announce that our 'educate a child' project has been officially launched by Amma during her visit to Kenya in April 2009.
